Hilton Head is a shoe shaped island located close to the southern most tip of the state of South Carolina, about 40 miles northeast of Savannah, Georgia. Access to the island via the Interstate Highway System in eastern South Carolina is by I-95 which provides access to all of the eastern Seaboard. Visitors to Hilton Head arrive by car, air and by boat via the Intracoastal Waterway.

Arriving by air? The Hilton Head Airport is on the “heel” of the island on Beach City Road just off US 278. The major carrier for this small municipal airport is US Airways Express. The closest major airport is Savannah International Airport which lies about 45 miles southwest of Hilton Head via I-95 north to U.S. 278 east. The airport is serviced by Delta, Airtran, Continental Express, United Express and US Airways. Car rentals are readily available at both of these airports.

The major north to south highway route through eastern South Carolina is the I-95, which connects with another northwest to southeast artery I-26 about 100 miles north of Hilton Head.

There is one toll-road on the island which should be used during peak travel times to avoid traffic problems. This is the Cross Island Parkway, which brings travelers from the north end of the island directly to the entrance of Sea Pines or the “toe” on the southwestern side of the island, a toll of $1 per car applies to this “short cut”. The William Hilton Parkway takes visitors the long way around toward the heel of the island, eventually curving southeast towards the mid-island and the “toe”. The William Hilton Parkway is a pleasant drive in the off-season, however there are long waits at some of the left turn traffic lights during peak drive times.
